Diamond jewellery cleaning & care
Diamonds are naturally occurring stones and susceptible to dirt and grime in the environment. It is important that you clean and care for your diamond jewellery. A real diamond can ordinarily be distinguished from a fake diamond because it will appear dull when it is dirty. Synthetic diamonds tend to not appear so dirty when worn for a period of time.
To protect your investment it is important to ensure you take proper care of your diamond jewellery by following these simple tips.
Care for your diamond
- Avoid touching your diamond as much as you can. Oils from your skin can dull the diamonds sparkle. To ensure it shines try not to fiddle with it.
- Invest in a good quality jewellery box. It is important to ensure your diamond jewellery is not placed next to other jewellery pieces to avoid scratches. A fabric-lined jewellery case with separate compartments is ideal. You can also individually wrap jewellery in soft tissue paper or use jewellery pouches for each piece.
- Remove diamond jewellery when working with chemicals. This includes cleaning products, abrasive substances, certain beauty products and chlorine. It’s a good idea to always take off your diamond jewellery before you swim. Along with the potential damage from chlorine a lost diamond in a swimming pool can be very hard to recover.
- Avoid wearing your diamonds in the shower as constant exposure to soap and and shampoo can build up in the crevasses of your jewellery. Make sure you put your diamond jewellery on last to avoid contact with your beauty products.
Clean your diamond jewellery
- Take your diamond jewellery for a professional clean at least once a year. This will also give your jeweller an opportunity to inspect your jewellery and fix any potential weakness that might have occurred such as loosened prongs of a faulty clasp.
- Clean your diamond regularly. A simple plan to keep your diamond jewellery always looking beautiful is to soak the diamond in an ammonia-based household cleaner (such as window cleaner) overnight, at least every month or so. In the morning, remove the diamond from the cleaner and brush it with a soft, clean toothbrush to remove any leftover dirt. Take extra care to brush the back of the diamond, as this will be the area that has collected the most oil and dirt. We do advise that you exercise causation when cleaning your own jewellery. Ensure you have good quality cleaning products and if you are not confident in your own cleaning ability, simply leave it to the professionals.
- Ultrasonic cleaning may be required to remove dirt and grime lodged in the intricacies of the setting. Although you can purchase these cleaners online and so on we don’t recommend using these devices without proper training. It is important to know the grade of your diamond and the cut to ensure that ultrasonic cleaners will not damage your diamond. If you are in any way uncertain about ultrasonic cleaning do not do it yourself, take the jewellery to a professional.
Insure your diamond
- Diamond insurance can be invaluable to cover extensive damage to your diamond. We recommend doing your research and deciding what cover suits you best. You can purchase individual cover for your diamond jewellery or you can include them in your home and contents policy. Please note, all insurance agencies have various policy with respect to insuring diamond jewellery. It is your responsibility to determine what level of cover suits you.
