Keep an eye open for the tell tale signs between the real deal and an imitation.
When you are choosing the perfect loose diamond or engagement ring, you should know what you are investing in. This is where diamond gradings and certificates are important.
With such great advances in modern day technology, there is no denying that unless one is a diamond expert, it is relatively difficult to tell the difference between a real diamond and a fake one. Unlike real diamonds that are formed though a complicated geological process, synthetic diamonds are artificially produced in laboratories.
Here are some simple steps that one can take to ensure that you are purchasing a genuine diamond.
1. The Water Test
A simple way to tell if a diamond is real or fake is to conduct a simple water test. Drop the gem into a glass of water and see if it sinks or floats. A real diamond will sink to the bottom whereas an imitation one will either float or hover in the middle. Keep in mind that this will only work if the diamond is a loose stone and not set in jewelry.
2. The Fog Test
Exhale onto the gem and note if the stone fogs up. If it stays foggy, it is most probably a fake as real diamonds disperse heat immediately. Real diamonds are known to stay clear and bright.
3. The Reflection Test
Hold the diamond up to the light and observe how the gem disperses light. Real diamonds tend to reflect light in various shades of grey whereas multi-colored dispersions indicate a fake or low-grade diamond.
If all else fails, request for the diamond’s authentication certificate appraised by a reliable and well-known organization such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
